Catching Up

Oh how I have missed you, blog friends! The last two weeks have been CRAZY. I had every intention of posting two yummy fall recipes, a few posts about nails and such, and some miscellaneous idea posts over the last few weeks, but I ended up doing none of those things. My poor little boy was so sick for so long that I did absolutely nothing but cuddle him for days, and then literally the day after he finally started feeling a little better I threw a triple baby shower for three of my good friends. Just a few days after that my in-laws arrived for a visit…and life has just been so busy! I wanted to write a “High Five for Friday” post yesterday to recap a bit of what has been happening, but well…it’s Saturday, so I missed that too. Ha!

Anyway, let’s catch up just a bit.

[Sick Baby]
Like I mentioned, Evan was sick for about two weeks and it drained us both of all the energy we had. First he had roseola and had a fever right around 104 for almost four days before his fever finally broke and he got the rash. The day after the rash showed up he came down with this horrible chest cold that had been going around, and by the next afternoon not only was his cough terrible, but it had developed into a double ear infection too. There was a whole day where we did absolutely nothing but sit and cuddle. I hate him being sick, but I loved those cuddles so much. Luckily, except for a slight lingering cough, he is better now! Thank goodness.

[Baby Shower]
Last Saturday I threw a triple baby shower for my friends Haley, Tami, and Heidi who are all due with baby boys back to back in November, December, and January. It was a lot of fun and we had a great turn out of friends. Planning ended up being exhausting (mostly because Evan was so sick for the whole week before hand) and because it was so windy that day it didn’t really turn out exactly as I had hoped, but everyone still had a good time and that’s really all that matters. I missed out on taking all the pictures I wanted to because I had a baby on my hip the whole time, but oh well! Haha I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again–try as I might, I’m just not the Pinterest mom I want to be.

[Farmer’s Markets]
For the last two weeks we have taken advantage of going to the local farmer’s markets and we have been loving it. This morning we got to taste so many yummy local treats and indulged in a few specialty things too. The weather has been beautiful here for the past few days and this morning was no different. We made sure to pick up some local avocados too–they are as big as my face and I love them!

It has been a long time since I shared nail designs with you all on the blog. I post them on Instagram more often than I blog them, but even there I have been slacking. I went a few months with bare nails to give myself a break (and because my nails were in poor condition due to my lack of TLC) but now that they are better and a reasonable length again, I’m back into doing my nails while my little one naps. I think I want to try the Jamberry nail wraps too. I hear a lot of good things about them, but I am so skeptical to spend so much money on something if I don’t know for sure that it will work. Maybe. We’ll see. Are any of you Jamberry consultants? Want to send me some for free so I can try them?

I have been terrible with working out lately, and starting a new workout while we have visitors is probably not the best idea, but as soon as everything settles back down I really want to start up yoga again (but for serious this time). I always feel so good after I do it, and it’s a challenge for me because it’s the kind of work out where I have to go go at my body’s own pace. I can’t make myself stretch any more quickly than my muscles want to, and I know that I can’t rush balancing either. I love working out really hard and feeling the burn of cardio and weight training too, but there is something so much more invigorating to my whole body to be able to contort myself, find that core balance, and get that amazing stretch. I wish I could afford to take classes somewhere, because sometimes it’s hard to do it at home and clear my mind, but paying for yoga is just out of the question right now. I follow @jesswalkeryoga on Instagram though and her posts totally inspire me to go for it and do yoga no matter where I have to do it! (Plus, if Evan can get his yoga on, I sure as heck better be able to also…)

Well, Evan’s nap is almost over and I know he is going to want to play any second, so I’ll wrap this up. I’m hoping to be able to post some of those recipes and other idea posts for you this week! Thanks for sticking with me even as I’ve been gone. It means the world to me!

High Five for Friday!

It’s Friday again! I can’t believe there is only one more Friday left in June. Crazy! Time for the weekly highlights!

1. I think the only thing worse than being sick yourself is having a baby who is sick…and then the only thing worse than that is both of you being sick at the same time. I just have a cold, but poor Evan has a fever too. I’m hoping this passes quickly!

2. On Wednesday Brinton and I celebrated four years of marriage! We had a great day and really enjoyed actually getting to go on a date too. Happy Anniversary love!

Wedding 2

3. I posted this on Instagram yesterday, but this week I have had a lot of fun with my nails. I have been trying to win an Erin Condren life planner since they are currently a bit out of my budget, but I have not been successful so far. So, instead of being sad, I decided to decorate my nails with some of my favorite classic life planner cover designs! I can’t decide which one is my favorite. What do you think?Image 4. Last night for dinner we had the most amazing, delicious roasted asparagus. Brinton and I both decided that this is how we are making it from now on because it really was that good. I’ll share the recipe with you all in an upcoming Delicious Dish Tuesday post!

5. The other day while we were driving through town on our way home, we saw a new restaurant and both nearly died laughing. I took a picture of it and even sent it in to The Ellen Show, because as soon as I saw the sign I thought that it was something that would make her crack up. Hopefully they end up airing it, but regardless, I wanted to share it here too.

Itchy Butt Chicken and Joy

Seriously who came up with the name of this place?!

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend! Tomorrow I’ll be posting a special post working with the online retailer One Kings Lane, so come back tomorrow to see what’s in store!

High Five for Friday

Ever since I started doing these H54F posts the weeks really seem to breeze by. I hope all of you have had a great week like I have! As per usual, let’s get right to it.

1. I’m working on making my blog a little more user friendly and designing a simple, clean layout. Mind you, I’m doing all of this on my own and trying to learn the coding along the way, so if things seem to look a little funny around here every now and then…I’m working on it!

2. For some reason commenting with OpenID has been totally messed up for me for the last two weeks or so, which is really frustrating because most of the blogs I follow are Blogger blogs and now I can’t comment on them. It makes it really difficult to connect with all of you wonderful people out there when I can’t leave a comment on your blog! Also to all the link up people…I know the rules are to visit other blogs and leave comments–believe me, I’m trying! If anyone knows how to fix this issue please let me know. From what I can tell it seems to be a common problem out there.

3. My husband and I both have the whole day off together today. Since we work opposite schedules trying to make sure someone is always home with the baby this is a pretty rare occurrence, and I am thrilled that he is sitting here by my side today (and helping me figure out blog stuff…I love this man so much!) And yes, we did take this picture just now, because we are awesome and super fun. Anyone who knows us in person will attest to that, haha.Image4. I was messing around with my manicure this week and came up with this kind of wacky, really fun design. When I was mixing nail colors for last week’s manicure I loved the swirled look as the colors were coming together, and this week I figured I would try to “mix” colors directly on my nail, and it worked! So fun!

Lavender and turquoise nails5. Brinton’s first Father’s Day is Sunday, and our anniversary is on Wednesday! I’m looking forward to a great week next week…I can’t wait for all the celebrating! I’m also really excited for his Father’s day gift which Evan and I made for him together. I’d show you all a preview, but since the hubs reads the blog (and is sitting next to me as I type this) you’ll just have to wait and see!

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

I love manicures. But two things I don’t like (or didn’t like) was paying to have my nails done, and how quickly they would chip! For that very reason I hardly ever got my nails done at a salon–it just wasn’t worth the price tag to me when I could do my own nails at home. That way, when it did chip, at least I had only spent a few dollars on a bottle of polish rather than half my paycheck on someone else doing it.

Two summers ago before I went to Europe for three weeks, I decided to treat myself and get my nails done. I had heard a lot about shellac manicures, so I splurged, spent a little bit extra, and decided to go for it. It claimed that it wouldn’t chip or peel for two weeks, and I figured if I could have nicely manicured nails for the majority of my trip, it was worth the cost! I had tried acrylic nails around the time of my junior prom and they totally ruined my nails (probably because no one told me how I would need to have them removed) and I didn’t want to venture back down that road. I tried the shellac polish, loved it, and it lasted through my whole trip. I mean, it was super grown out and had begun to chip in the last week or so, but I was sold.

I was not sold on the price tag, though. I started to look into at home systems, which ended up being mostly gel polish. I had heard a lot about the Sally Hansen line that was just coming out at the time and had it in hand, ready to purchase when I saw a system called Sensationail. I put the Sally Hansen one back on the shelf, went home, did quite a bit of research including watching as many YouTube videos as I could find (which wasn’t many at the time because it was so new), and went back to the store to purchase that one instead. I am so glad I did! I could not be more pleased with my investment.

Image from Sensationail, and is linked to the starter kit page!

A Sensationail starter kit retails for about $60, depending on where you buy it from. (As a side note, things are always more expensive in Hawaii…so prices may be a bit different on the mainland or internationally, although I imagine it would only be a few dollars difference, if anything.) They offer the starter kit in four different colors, including Pink Chiffon (light pink), Scarlet Red (bright red), Raspberry Wine (a deep wine color), and French Manicure. I personally purchased the Pink Chiffon color. The starter kits include the LED light, a color polish, a base/top coat, the gel cleanser, the gel primer, lint-free wipes, a double-sided nail buffer, a manicure stick, and an instruction booklet. So, while it is kind of an investment up front–the cost of one to two manicures–in the long run it is way cheaper than going to a salon. Individual color polishes retail for about $9-12 dollars (again, depending on what store you buy from and what state/country you live in) and their color selection is amazing! The colors are so nicely pigmented and I can usually achieve the look I want in two coats. In fact, the number of colors they have to choose from is one of the reasons I ultimately decided to go with this system over others.

The process is simple: lightly buff the natural nail and wipe it clean with the lint-free wipes and gel cleanser, and prime the nail. Then apply the base coat and cure with the light for 30 seconds, apply one coat of the color and cure for 60 seconds, apply a second coat of color and cure for 60 seconds, and apply the topcoat and cure for 30 seconds. Wipe the nail with the lint-free wipes and gel cleanser to remove any tackiness, and that’s it! Completely dry, super shiny, ready to go gel nails that last for up to two weeks. On average, mine last for about 10 days before I start to see peeling or chipping, but I have had several manicures last quite a bit longer. Other than the polishes themselves being on the pricey side, I have pretty much no complaints about Sensationail. Overall, I am very impressed and this is the only way I do my nails anymore. Why bother with regular polish and wait for it to dry only to chip a day later?

Here are just a few of the manicures I have done since becoming obsessed (and I really am…just ask my husband). I get most of my inspiration from Pinterest, but I’m working on coming up with more of my own designs. In fact the four pictures on the right are all my designs, and the four on the left are inspiration from Pinterest or other Sensationail lovers that I follow on Instagram. I’m extremely amateur, but not too bad for having almost no artistic skills whatsoever. Haha.

And this one, which is what I am currently wearing. It’s such a happy spring manicure!

PS, this is not a sponsored post and I’m not getting paid to talk about how great Sensationail is. I just found a product I love and couldn’t help but share it! If you have mani/pedi ideas, share the inspiration down below!

Coral, Glitter, and Striped Nails

For the last few weeks, I have been wanting to do a coral and gold glitter manicure on my nails, but I’ve been lacking inspiration as to what I actually wanted them to look like! I scoured Pinterest, Instagram, and YouTube to try and find a nail design that I liked, but nothing really grabbed me. I know choosing a nail design shouldn’t be such a dilemma…if you don’t like it just take it off, right? But my nails usually last two weeks because I use an at home gel system called Sensationail, which means I want to make sure I’m going to like what I’m painting on there!

I knew I wanted to try the falling glitter look, and I wanted to throw a splash of turquoise in there too, but even when I sat down to paint my nails, I didn’t know what I was doing yet! I think most of my inspiration came from Janelle who I have been following on YouTube for a while now, but I did end up switching things up a bit, and I am loving the finished look!

I’ll be posting a complete review and how-to of the Sensationail system next week (I said the same thing last year, but I mean it this time!) Until then, here is a pictorial how-to if you want to achieve the same look…gel nails or not!

1. Base Coat 2. Coral on all nails except ring finger 3. White on ring finger 4. Apply two coats, should look like this 5. Add glitter to the base of the nail 6. Using fan brush, spread glitter until it looks how you want it 7. Close up of nail after glitter is spread 8. Add two lines, one thicker than the other 9. Add gold stripes around thicker line, and a coral stripe on top of thinner line 9a. Close up 10. Add a line of gold glitter on top of coral stripe, add top coat on all nails. Finished!

Confession: I splurged.

It has been a very long time since I have gone shopping. Being pregnant last year, money being tight, and figuring out what my body is doing postpartum have pretty much put the brakes on expanding my wardrobe at all. But now that I am nearly back to my pre-pregnancy size, I decided to head to the mall and see if I could find some new clothes.

Enter Old Navy. Ever since this post on Ashley’s blog (I talk as if I actually know her…ha!) I have been dying for a cute polka dot shirt. I almost never find anything at Old Navy. I don’t know what it is, but usually, their clothes just fit me kind of weird. Most of the maternity clothes I found were from there though, so I decided to at least give it a try. The shirt she was wearing in her pictures was supposedly on sale too…and I’m a sucker for a good sale. I’m so glad I went in! I didn’t find the shirt she talked about (no more in my size now that it is on clearance), but I did find awesome pants. These pants are SO much fun, and they were even on sale. I wanted to get a few pairs, but I didn’t feel like I could splurge that much, so I stuck with just the one pair for now. As I kept looking I found the cutest shoes too…and then something like five shirts, two dresses, and a pair of jeans. What?! That never happens! By the way…Old Navy isn’t paying me to say nice things (are you kidding me? Only like twelve people even read this blog, haha.) I really did just have fantastic luck and was able to get a few really nice pieces. I topped it off by getting some new accessories at Forever 21–because who can resist super cheap/trendy jewelry??? I completed the look with a cute nail design, which I think tied it all together pretty nicely!

Fourth of July and other weekend randomness

We are only one week into July and I feel like I am already playing catch up! We were super busy this last week, but we still tried to make time for some fun stuff. Brinton and I both had to work all day on the 4th (which I was super bummed about because it was a beautiful day here in Hawaii!), but we were at least able to join our friends in the evening for some food and fireworks at Ala Moana.  We had such a great evening though that it didn’t really matter that we had both worked all day long!

Fourth of July CollageAnd let’s not forget the festive nails!

This nail design is all over Pinterest, so I decided to give it a try. I love how it turned out!

This nail design is all over Pinterest, so I decided to give it a try. I love how it turned out!

Confession: these were actually my Memorial Day nails. I did the same exact thing for the 4th, except I did my ring finger with red and blue polka dots instead of the stripes and heart. I don’t know why I didn’t take a picture!

The rest of the weekend we took to try and get stuff done around the house. On Saturday I very suddenly felt that we had a lot of stuff. Does anyone else know what I mean? We are working right now on sorting through all of that so we can get rid of the clutter and have everything organized for when baby comes. It’s definitely a process, but I really love that “ahh, it’s clean and everything has its place” feeling, ya know?

I’m probably going to do a more organized home post when we finish this project, but I did want to share one more photo. Brinton and I tackled cleaning out our closet yesterday, and I absolutely love the way that he has reorganized his ties.

It should be noted that this boy has a ridiculous number of ties…this isn’t even all of them! Before his mission he was trying to build a collection of one tie for every day of the year…but luckily I think he has since given up on that. Zip ties are on the right, regular ties on the left.

Haha, I am sure he is going to think I am a complete weirdo for loving this so much that I shared it on my blog…but I think it’s brilliant. It looks so nice! I should have taken a before and after shot of the whole closet, but did I? Nope. Oh well. The closet got clean. That’s all that matters!

I’m hoping to stay more on top of things on the blog this week. I have most mornings off and I’m closing instead for the next few days, so hopefully that means I can get quite a bit done before work. And I promise, week 32 baby update and picture coming soon!
