The Silver Lining

Last week was so busy that I completely missed my silver lining post. Even though it was a crazy day today too and it’s super late, I didn’t want a second week to go by without reflecting on the positive things that happened! That being said, I’m sleepy, so let’s keep this short, shall we?

Silver Lining Header

Yoga // This last week has been a difficult week, workout wise. My wrist has really been bothering me which has made it hard to keep up with the Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30 program that I’ve been doing. On the bright side, I’ve been switching gears and doing yoga instead to allow my body to rest and avoid injury, and I feel like I’ve made some real progress with the flexibility of my hips! So, that’s always nice!

Girl Scout Cookies // My mom sent us a care package with our three favorite girl scout cookies: thin mints, tagalongs, and samoas. I’ve been doing better not munching on sweets when I’ve been hungry these past few weeks, but with these in the house, you can bet that will go right out the window. But the silver lining is…I have girl scout cookies!!! Haha, it’s both a blessing and a curse, y’all.

Roaches // Well, it’s Hawaii, so naturally we have roaches we have to deal with. ’tis the season (aka always…thanks Hawaii) and I hate it. What could possibly be the silver lining here? We are going to have an exterminator come, but in order to have him treat our apartment properly we need to completely clean out a few areas of our apartment which means I get to embrace my type A personality and go on a de-cluttering and organizing spree! (Um, side note: just to clarify…we aren’t dirty people or anything like that, and by de-cluttering I mean getting rid of extra kitchen gadgets we don’t use anymore, old cookbooks, etc. We have roaches because it’s Hawaii, not because we are gross!)

GiGi New York // So I just instagrammed this, but I am super bummed about missing out on the oh so amazing Uber clutch in white. I was going to use some birthday money to treat myself to something really nice that I never would have otherwise…but before I could checkout they were gone. I don’t know what my silver lining is, haha. I saved money! That’s good, right? Gigi New York I know there is no way you would ever see this, but if you wanted to give out the most amazing birthday surprise ever, my initials are MAJ and you would make me oh so happy! Haha. Worth a shot, right?

GiGi New York clutch

City Noise // As you may or may not have seen in two of my recent posts, I have started delving into the world of YouTube. It has been so hard to find time to film with a toddler running around though that I haven’t been quite as consistent as I would like with posting videos. I filmed another one today while my little was napping, but it took like three times longer than it should have because it is so loud here and the background city noise was ridiculous! On the bright side, I’m not letting that stop me and I am pretty determined to find a way to make it work. Also, I promised myself I would push myself outside of my comfort zone this year, and YouTube definitely falls into that category! So all in all, even though it’s challenging to make the videos and I am nervous to post them, it’s a good experience for me to go through.

Okay, that’s it friends! I’ll be back tomorrow with a new post and video (provided I can make the time to edit it in the morning!), so I hope to see you then! Have a great Saturday!

Linking up with Five on Friday and Oh Hey Friday!

High Five for Friday!

Hey Friday! It’s been a while! I’ve missed celebrating the weekend with you all. The family and I are actually driving up to the north shore right now, so this will be a reasonably short post because I’m doing it from my phone. I just couldn’t go another week missing high five for Friday though!

Let’s jump in!

(Well, I was writing this from my phone this morning…and then I lost cell reception…so now it’s tonight. Oh well.)

1. A few weeks ago I mentioned that I made the change to a windows phone. I can’t say I’m completely sold on it (I love android a bit too much I think to ever really make a permanent switch to something different), but I can say that I am in love with the camera on this thing. I rarely need to use a filter anymore and it takes amazing pictures. Follow me on Instagram to see all the pictures I post!

2. I saw these amazingly gorgeous earrings at a gift shop at the Polynesian Cultural Center yesterday, and I fell in love with them. If they hadn’t been so expensive I would have scooped them up immediately, but I can’t just go dropping $25 bucks on earrings right now. I realize $25 probably isn’t that much to some of you fashion bloggers out there, but times are tight! Someday though. I’ve promised myself not to leave the islands without buying them.

Um, amazing news…I just googled Creations by Keiko to see if she had a website I could link up, and the earrings in her Etsy shop are only $16 instead of $25. Hooray! Now when I’m able to splurge, maybe I can manage two pairs instead of just one!

3. With the grandparents in town we have gotten the chance to play tourist for the past week and a half. It’s always fun being able to do that, because the fact of  the matter is we just don’t take the time to explore the island unless people are here visiting. I wish we could make more time to do that, but sometimes life just gets so busy, you know?

4. Brinton just found out he finally received a promotion to full time working at Microsoft! This has been long awaited and we are both really excited for this opportunity. Unfortunately it also means that I have had to quit my job, which was really hard for me to do. I was only working two short mornings per week anyway, but there was just no way we could balance Brinton going to school and working more hours and then finding childcare on top of that. I am glad though that I’ll be able to be with Evan 100% now. He is at an age where he is learning something new every day, and I don’t want to miss a new word, or those first steps.

5. It is crazy, ridiculously, disgustingly hot and humid here right now. I was going to have another fun weekly highlight for my “number five,” but it feels so miserable out right now that I can’t even think of anything else. Oh my goodness I miss air conditioning. I know, I know…first world problems. But we have lived without AC now for three years in one of the hottest and most humid places in the US…sometimes I’m fine with it, but tonight it’s really killing me.

Okay, that’s all! Life is almost back to “normal” here, which means blogging will be soon too. I haven’t posted a recipe in what seems like forever, so I’m pretty sure that’s what I’m going to be posting next!

Weekending…All Week Long!

Two weeks ago my sister came to visit. We had such a great time! I took the week off of blogging when she was here (with the exception of a yummy Mongolian Tofu dish I shared) so that we could explore O’ahu and spend as much time together as possible. Even the threat of a hurricane or two didn’t kill our party!

After she left I decided to take one more week away from the blog to enjoy one of the last weeks of summer before Brinton starts school again and our schedules become insane! So, I apologize for being absent…but I’m not actually sorry. Ha! It’s always nice to take a vacation from technology, especially when it means enjoying a beautiful island and spending time with family. I’ve had a great last two weeks, and I hope you have too!

Enjoy some of our pictures, and I’ll see you this week as I dive back into my normal routine!

(P.S. I know my sister is about ten shades darker than I am…but I promise we really are related!)

High Five for Friday

Can anyone else believe it is the last Friday in July already?! Complete and utter craziness. I don’t think I will ever not be surprised at how quickly time passes. I had quite a productive week this week–how about you? I hope so!

Okay y’all…let’s get to it.

1. On Saturday my planner came and to say I was excited was an understatement. In the last week I have been experimenting with ways to organize it and what color code I want to use, etc. That might make me sound like a nerd, but I love to be organized so much. Sometimes looking at my apartment you would have NO idea that was true…but we’re working on that. Anyway, it has felt awesome for the last week to start to make myself more organized. I feel a lot more on top of things.

2. On Instagram yesterday I shared a picture of these beautiful plumeria flowers I saw while walking home from a friend’s house. These flowers are all over here in Hawaii, but I always love running into them. These ones were particularly lovely!

3. Evan has decided that he wants to eat completely independently, which makes meal time an epic battle. I am all for him eating independently (maybe I should have better researched baby-led weaning when starting foods with him?) but all that ends up happening is a mess. I’ve tried to move him away from purees and give him almost all table food–after all, he is completely capable of chewing and eating–but half the time all he does is play with it. If I try to go back to a puree-like meal and feed it to him, he grabs the spoon and tries to feed himself…which means it goes allllll over. Yesterday I decided to run with it and teach him how to use a spoon, which was slightly effective, but resulted in this picture. Yes, that is food on his head…and everywhere else. Haha. I’m sure we will figure it out eventually.

4. Yesterday Evan and I went swimming, and though it took him a while, he finally really enjoyed himself! Poor baby is usually pretty afraid of the water (except his bath…he loves his bath), but the ocean is just too much for him. I keep telling him he has to like the ocean–he’s a Hawaii baby! Yesterday we went to the pool instead, and after I eased him into it, he had a blast! This kid was the splash king of the pacific. It was adorable to see him having so much fun. Baby steps!

5. This week at Safeway Ben and Jerry’s was on sale and we had two coupons…so we splurged a little. My favorite Ben and Jerry’s flavor is the Karamel Sutra. It’s half chocolate ice cream with chocolate pieces, half vanilla caramel ice cream, and a core of caramel. IT IS SO GOOD. I love the Phish Food flavor too, but I will always always always choose the Karamel Sutra when given the option.

Well, I’m off to have a fun filled weekend with my family! I have no idea what we will be doing and Brinton is working most of the weekend, but I still have a feeling it will be a good one. Tomorrow Evan turns 11 months old! I’ll be sure to post tomorrow morning so you can see his adorable little face again.

Have a great day!

High Five for Friday

You guys. I’m so sleepy. I had every intention of writing this post this morning during Evan’s first nap, but I prioritized cleaning my kitchen over blogging (an excellent and very necessary decision, might I add) and now it’s almost 9pm Hawaii time and I’m just now getting the chance to sit down. Oh well! Better late than never, right?

On to this week’s happenings!

1. Last weekend we went camping with a big group of our friends and we had a great time! I know I said that I would post pictures of our weekend on Instagram, but my phone died early in the evening on the first night and I accidentally left the memory card for our camera at home, so that didn’t happen. You know what? It felt amazing to be digitally disconnected for a day. It was refreshing. I think I need to do that more often. Anyway, we had a lot of fun, but camping with a 10 month old was a bit more challenging than I expected…aka…I got very, very little sleep. Haha. He absolutely would not go down in the pack-n-play and the only way he would sleep was next to me. Here are pictures Brinton took with his phone! Thanks love!

The entrance to our campsite. I love how ominous the clouds are on the windward side sometimes.

Gotta have your books when you’re camping! These two are best friends!

First family camping trip!

I don’t remember who came up with this idea, but these were an awesome twist on a traditional s’mores sandwich. Oh man. I want one now.

What? Isn’t this what the scenery looks like when you go camping? PS yes, that’s a lake, not the ocean.

Brinton was sneaky-sneaky and took this picture of us early in the morning. I guess we did get a little sleep, after all.

2. My poor baby boy has had a fever since yesterday morning. Yesterday it ended up being really high in the evening–103.2–and we ended up taking him to the doctor even though he had no other symptoms. Other than having a high fever everything else seemed totally normal, so they told us to just keep him comfortable and watch him to see if other symptoms popped up. His fever has been much lower today, never rising above 100.7, and he has been acting completely normal all day. I’m glad that it hasn’t been bothering him much, but I wish I knew what was causing it! I have a feeling it’s teething–I’ve heard babies can have fevers while teething, but I didn’t think they got that high! I checked his mouth tonight though, and sure enough I can see two more top teeth almost at the surface, and one more bottom tooth which just barely broke through. If he’s getting three teeth at once, no wonder he has been feverish! Hopefully that’s all this is and no other symptoms pop up this weekend.

3. Remember a few weeks ago when I said I wanted an Erin Condren life planner? My amazing husband was saving up for one for me and even used some of his father’s day money so I could order one. I’m excited because I should have it by Monday, and I’ve been looking forward to having it for a long time! Now hopefully I haven’t built it up so much in my mind that I’m disappointed when I see it. Haha do any of you ever do that? I’m sure I’ll love it!

4. Yesterday I attended a live webinar hosted by Mama Natural all about essential oils. In general, I tend to stay away from things that are sold using pyramid schemes and such, and I’m always a little hesitant about jumping on the bandwagon with suddenly super popular trends (and right now it seems like everybody and their brother is all about essential oils). I don’t know why…I just hesitate. I am interested in the oils though, and I’m really considering ordering a starter kit as something I can play with and see if I like them. I love the idea of using a more natural approach for curing ailments and such…so we’ll see how it goes. If I do order some, I’ll be sure to tell you all about them.

5. Recently I feel like I have kind of lost my identity at work. Since I have dropped down to casual part time (which I love, by the way) I feel so out of the loop, and I feel like maybe I don’t quite matter there anymore. It’s a hard thing to go from working full time to being there only two days a week for just a few hours–I have to remember that I’m not on the same track that I used to be on (as far as working toward a management position) and though my knowledge and abilities have not changed, my role has. Don’t get me wrong. I love being at home and would choose being mommy over anything else…I think sometimes I just wonder if I’m still valued there. Do any of you know what I mean?

6. I have the cutest baby. I know all moms feel this way…but seriously…look at this little face. Adorable.

High Five for Friday!

Well folks, another week has come and gone. This summer is whizzing by! Do I say this every week? I feel like I say this all the time. Oh well. It’s true! Anyway, I have lots of highlights from this week (and some from last week) but I’ll try to keep it somewhat short. Here we go!

1. A few months ago I contacted Kaitlyn at Wifessionals about sharing my birth story. Since Evan was breech, I had to have a C-section. I had a very, very hard time with that. I debated for a long time about whether or not to share my emotional struggle, but in the end I decided I would rather share it and connect with others who might have felt the same way instead of keeping it to myself and feeling guilty for the way I felt about my experience. It really did feel like a confessional writing it, and so I felt that rather than publishing it here, Wifessionals would be the perfect place for it. She just posted it this morning; if you would like to read it, you can click here. Warning…it’s a long read.

2. This weekend our little family is going camping with a bunch of friends on the other side of the island. It will be our first official family camping experience, and I am so excited! I’m not a super outdoorsy person (haha, I hear you laughing mom and dad and sister…) but I have really learned to appreciate all of the awesome things there are to do here in Hawaii…and camping is definitely one of them. I’ll probably end up posting pictures here, or you can follow along on Instagram. I’m going to try to keep my phone off for most of the weekend, but I’ll still share pictures when we get back!

3. Last week was fourth of July, and to celebrate we went box sledding at Kaka’ako and watched fireworks from there. It was Evan’s first time seeing fireworks and luckily, we were far enough away that the noise wasn’t too loud and he wasn’t all freaked out. Haha, he did look a little skeptical (why are there lights flashing in the sky mom?!), but he had a good time. Also, I was able to capture the most amazing sunset on film (do people say ‘on film’ anymore when everything is digital?) Here are some of the pictures…enjoy!

And one of Evan, because he’s adorable:

4. My sister just got back from a few months of being gone in Rwanda. I’m so excited that she is home (even though her being home still means she is in North Carolina and still like 6,000 miles away…) so that we can talk more regularly again! It also means we are only weeks away from her Hawaii visit and I’m super excited to see her!!!

5. A few weeks ago I exchanged some makeup at Bare Minerals and got some money back on a gift card. They called me a few days later to remind me that I also have a Friends and Benefits coupon I have to use before Tuesday…so I’m off now to get to the mall and pick up some “free” makeup! Yay!

Okay guys. I’ll see you all next week…I’m off to have a fun, relaxing weekend with my family and our friends. I hope you do the same!

High Five for Friday

Another week has just breezed right on by! Can you believe the year is already halfway over? I can’t! On to this week’s highlights…

1. About two weeks ago one of my best friends had complications with her pregnancy and had to deliver her baby at just over 31 weeks. Sweet Ellie has been doing so well though, and I read on her blog this morning that she was just able to graduate to an open crib! They have been on my mind pretty much every minute of every day, and I wish I could be back home in NC to help somehow. I’m glad to hear she is progressing well!

2. Last week Evan got his first real sickness and had Hand Foot Mouth Disease. I had never heard of this before I moved here, but apparently its a super common childhood illness. Luckily his case was extremely mild, and he is finally all better. I think he has a few nails that might fall off though…apparently that can happen sometimes. It’s gross to think about, I know. Hopefully it doesn’t happen, but I’ll take that over being really sick and having open sores!

3. This week for our mutual activity we took the young women paddle boarding. It was my first time doing it, and oh my goodness I had so much fun. Why have I lived in Hawaii for three years and never done this before?! I told Brinton that we absolutely have to get a sitter for Evan some time soon and do this as a date. I’m excited to go again! We are so lucky to live in Hawaii.

4. Pretty Little Liars has been back for a few weeks now, and even though I was really excited, I’ve kind if felt disappointed with the episodes so far. I feel like it has just been a lot of run-around and almost no plot progression. And my goodness what does Melissa know already?! Just tell us!

5. Today I tried a new hairstyle inspired by Kate from The Small Things Blog. I love her hair ideas, and though they rarely ever look the same on me when I try to do them, I usually still really like how it turns out. So thanks Kate! I used probably about 47 more bobby pins than you did…but oh well! (And yes, I did just take this picture in the bathroom at work just now. That’s how I roll. You can’t really see it extremely well, but my break was almost over and I was rushing.)

Happy weekend everyone!
