June Favorites

These last two days have been…hectic. Evan has started this lovely habit of waking up between 5:00 and 5:30am…and it has been killing us. We have tried putting him to bed earlier (sleep supposedly begets sleep, right?), later, changing his naps during the day…nothing seems to help. It wouldn’t be such a big deal, but with Brinton’s new job sometimes he doesn’t get home until 10 or 11pm. Since that’s really the only time we get to see each other during the day we don’t want to cut it short by saying “hi…goodnight,” so instead we end up staying up later and then we are exhausted come morning. I’m open to suggestions, moms and dads!

Anyway, with very little sleep and working a few extra shifts this week, I haven’t really had time to even think about my June favorites, let alone blog about them. Even now, it is very late in the evening Tuesday (it is already Wednesday for every time zone on the mainland) and I’m barely getting this posted. So this is another two in one post–June favorites and a recipe! Yay! (If you are here just for the recipe, scroll to the bottom.)

Revlon ColorStay Foundation— A few weeks ago I tried a sample of the Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet + foundation at Sephora and I really liked it…just not enough to shell out $36 bucks for it. I researched a bit and came across quite a few blogs that said that the Revoln ColorStay foundation was a pretty good dupe for it, so I decided at $9 and change it was worth a try. I purchased the formula for combination/oily skin in the color 180 Sand Beige. This makeup is fantastic. It covers well and has a nice finish to it, but it doesn’t feel heavy on the skin. It is mattifying but doesn’t make my skin look chalky, and it doesn’t end up looking “cakey” throughout the day. I think it was a much better investment than splurging on the MUFE. The only thing that would make this better is if it had a pump instead of just an open top. But other than that little detail, I really can’t complain.

Boom Chicka Pop Caramel and Cheddar Popcorn— So yummy! I am a huge fan of sweet and salty sacks, so when I first tried this I was so happy! It is just so so good. There is a really great balance of caramel and cheddar, and the flavors compliment each other so well. Plus the bag looks awesome. Fun packaging is a plus! I bought this at Costco for just a few dollars…so it’s a big bag! And yes, that is my coworker taking a selfie with it. Haha…we have fun at work.

Thanks for the photo, WIlson!

Scandal— My husband and I are completely addicted to this show. I know we are way behind the bandwagon here, but oh my goodness. We can’t stop watching it. I’m glad that there are several seasons on Netflix already, but we are speeding through them and I am going to be bummed when we have to wait to watch them like everyone else. Also, I love every single outfit Kerry Washington wears on the show. I generally don’t have “fashion icons,” but if I had to choose someone, it would be her (both her character on the show and her real life style!) Edit: As I was looking for a picture of the show, I came across fantastic news! A Scandal fashion collection will be coming to The Limited on September 22nd of this year so we can all dress like Olivia Pope! Haha, I’m in love! Now seriously…The Limited needs to come to Hawaii. Like…now.

Bare Minerals Ready Blush (The Natural High)— This is such a beautiful, peachy pink color with an almost golden iridescent shimmer. I love love love it. I feel like it makes my face come alive a bit and the subtle shimmer helps to catch the light in such a way that I glow ever so slightly. But…in a pretty way…not a greasy way or something like that. It is a really beautiful shade, and I appreciate the Ready formula because it is so convenient to just grab and go on mornings where I didn’t quite get to finish my makeup at home. Also, the packaging is phenomenal. I love the matte black case and how velvety smooth it is. It’s the little things, folks.

Curried Tofu over Mashed Potatoes— I said there would be a recipe, remember! I’m always looking for new ways to cook tofu, because I really only know about two ways to use it. This recipe was so, so yummy. I ate it last night for dinner, today for lunch, and to be completely honest if there were more of it I would want it for dinner again tonight. It is my new favorite way to cook tofu and it has skyrocketed to one of my favorite go-to recipes. Bonus: it’s a simple recipe and uses only a few ingredients!

Curried Tofu.jpg

For the potatoes:

For the curried tofu:
1 block of extra firm tofu
2 carrots, peeled and sliced thinly (or shredded)
1 small onion
2 teaspoons of garlic
1.5 cups coconut milk
1 tablespoon curry
A few tablespoons of oil (whatever oil you prefer)
Seasoned salt
Salt and pepper to taste

To make mashed potatoes, rinse, peel, and chop the potatoes into small cubes. Put them in a large pot of water and bring the water to a boil. Cook them until a fork pierces them easily, drain, and put the potatoes back in the pot. Add butter, milk, and salt, and mash them up as much as you like! I like my potatoes a little lumpy, but if you like them smooth you can always blend them a bit. (Mashed potatoes are really simple…the real recipe here is the tofu!)

Mashed Potatoes Collage

For the curried tofu, begin by slicing the block of tofu into cubes. Pat it dry and let it rest for a few minutes. Heat about a tablespoon or two of oil in a pan over medium high heat, season the tofu with seasoned salt, and saute until golden brown. My seasoned salt had expired (which quite frankly, I didn’t know it could do) so I just seasoned it with salt, garlic powder, and paprika. Once it is browned off, remove it from the pan and set it aside. Add one more tablespoon of oil to the pan and saute the garlic, onion, and carrots until the onions become translucent, about 4 minutes. Add the coconut milk, curry powder, salt, and pepper, and cook for about another 4 minutes until the sauce begins to thicken and everything is nicely blended. Add the tofu back to the pan and mix to coat it with the sauce. Serve over the potatoes, and enjoy!

So looking back at my favorites apparently I like beauty products, eating, and watching tv. Oh well. Maybe July will help me branch out a little, haha! Thanks for bearing with me as I try to play catch up this week a little!

April and May Favorites

My goodness today has been so busy. I know for pretty much everyone else, it is already tomorrow, but here in Hawaii it is still Saturday, and since I promised my April and May favorites were going to be up today I am going to deliver on that!

Last month I never got around to posting my favorites. By the time I was ready to do it, it was already the middle of May…so I decided why not combine the two months and call it good? So, that’s what we are doing! I feel like this is kind of a random assortment of things, but isn’t it always?

Tory Burch Sunglasses-I know I posted about these a few weeks ago (yes, it is the same picture), but since they came in I have been obsessed. These are hands down my favorite sunglasses, and I am even more stoked about them because they are in my prescription. I love the way they fit my head, the coverage they give, the polarized and slightly gradient lenses, but most of all, I love how kind of cat-eye they are! Retro with a modern twist for sure. It’s going to take a lot to top these sunglasses. I have a feeling they will hold the top spot as my favorites for a while…and this is really saying something since I have three other pairs of prescription sunglasses and at least four plano (regular) sunglasses. Perks of working for a glasses company, I suppose! TB sunNYC Liquid Lipshine-These are the best! I was going to take a picture of my collection, but…I forgot. I’m at a friend’s house babysitting now, otherwise I’d get right on it. Anyway, I love these because they feel so nice on the lips (not tacky at all) and the color payoff is great! Some of the colors are a bit more sheer than others–I wish the coral one in particular was more pigmented–but in general I haven’t found a color I didn’t like. Plus, since these are NYC, you know they are inexpensive! I think they retail for $1.99 or so. Can’t beat that! Since they are just a gloss the color doesn’t last super long, but I don’t even care. We are in a serious relationship and we aren’t breaking up any time soon.

Briannas’ Home Style Rich Poppy Seed Dressing-Y’all…this dressing. Ohmygoodness. The other night we were over at a friend’s house and last minute she decided to make a salad. After looking through the fridge she realized all she had for the salad was lettuce. No joke…because of this dressing I had three servings…yes…of just lettuce. It is so good. It’s like a flavor explosion of amazingness. (Side note…amazingness is underlined in red. Is that not a word? Because it should be. Haha.) I’m actually sitting here typing this waiting (anxiously) for my husband to get off work so he can stop at the store (Safeway) on the way home and buy this dressing so I can finally eat dinner. Am I crazy? Maybe. (Probably.) But I made a salad for dinner tonight and I feel that it would be wrong to eat it with anything but this dressing. So I’ll wait. Only 33 more minutes…

Old Navy-Well this one shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who has been reading my blog in the last two months. Pretty much every outfit I have shared on here has been from Old Navy. Their clothes this season are fantastic. ON is usually all hit or miss for me, and I have been winning winning winning lately! I started to become more of an ON fan when I was pregnant because it was one of the only places that I found cute and affordable maternity clothing (I got a pair of fantastic maternity pants for $2.47 on clearance…what?!) and so when I was back down to my normal size postpartum I decided to give them a try again. I am so glad I did! When my budget gets a little bigger and I get this blog off the ground, I’m planning on having an ON gift card giveaway…so spread the word, share with your friends, and keep checking back to see when that will be!

All of my Old Navy favorite outfits from the last few months! 1/2/3/4

Jessica Simpson Wallet-I found this wallet at Ross a while back and I am really glad I bought it. It’s the first wallet I have used in a while that has actually stayed organized since I purchased it. I don’t think I have ever had to sit down and clean it out. It has two compartments which I love, and it has plenty of space for all of my cards and everything else. I also love the color so much! It’s holding up nicely and I use it every day, so hopefully it lasts quite a long time.Bottom half 2 Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30-At the very end of this workout, Jillian says, “Transformation is not a future event, it is a present activity.”  I love that! Today was the first day I tried this program. Confession? It kicked my butt. I have done absolutely nothing since having Evan to get back into shape. I have been lucky enough to lose all of the baby weight and am back down to my pre-pregnant weight, but everything is much…squishier. I am definitely not as toned as I was before the baby, and I get winded a lot more easily than I used to. I finally decided I was actually going to get off my butt and do something about it instead of just thinking about doing it, and today was that day. “I just had a baby” really can’t be my excuse anymore at nine months postpartum, and being worried about my C-section recovery can’t either! I’m good to go…I just have to do it! I found these exercises to be challenging but not impossible, and I appreciated Jillian’s motivation through the whole thing. I only made it through just over 20 minutes today, but I am proud of myself for doing something. My goal is to be able to get through the whole thing by the end of next week, and then be completely ripped in 30 days, like the video said. Haha. Serious about the first part…kidding about the second. We’ll see how it goes!Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30 I’m giving an honorable mention to Make Up For Ever’s Mat Velvet + makeup. I’ve only tried a sample from Sephora, but so far I really like it. I’ll try it out longer or see if I can find a nice dupe for it and let you know my thoughts.

Wow! I feel like I just talked a lot, but I suppose I was catching up for two months, so it is what it is! In case any of you are wondering, it is now t-minus fifteen minutes until dressing arrives. So. Excited.

Did any of you have any favorite things this month that you think I should try? Let me know…I’m always open to new favorites!

March Favorites

Well, one-quarter of 2014 is already gone. Springtime is finally upon us–though I’m not sure why I’m saying finally…it’s always warm here in Hawaii and now is the time of year for increasing humidity (yuck). But for everyone else who has had horrible winters, I’m sure it’s nice to have a breath of spring air! Looking back on my month, here are just a few things I have been loving.

PS-I’ll try to keep these monthly favorite posts confined to things NOT baby related since I’m doing separate monthly posts on that. Sound good? Good.

Homemade Clif/granola bars– Oh my goodness. These things are so good. The only problem is that I want them always…which may be counterproductive to my attempts to eat healthier. But regardless, they are delicious and are so super simple to make. I was going to do a whole blog post about making them, but I found the recipe I use online, and her pictures are way nicer than mine would have been anyway. Check it out here.

Sarah Rose– I have lived in Hawaii for about 2.5 years now and I haven’t been to the same hair-stylist twice. I seriously could not find anyone who could cut my hair and I would like it the next day. Last year I found Sarah Rose through a LivingSocial deal, and I am so glad I did. When I went back to NC for Christmas I decided to get all of my hair chopped off on a whim (well…to my shoulders…but it was a lot of hair coming off…) and I ended up hating it. I waited a few months to try and make it work, but it was a no-go. Enter Sarah! This girl is amazing. I came in to see her again and vaguely described what I wanted and she delivered to a T. I absolutely love love love my hair (and now I don’t regret having cut off all my length). I finally found my go-to stylist! Any of you who live on O’ahu have got to check her out!

Date Night– This month was the first time since having Evan that Brinton and I were able to go out on a date just the two of us. It was so nice! We enjoyed an absolutely delicious Korean meal at a nice restaurant and then went out to Coldstone to kind of recreate our first date in high school and get ice cream. We ordered the same thing as our very first date too! I got cake-batter with chocolate sprinkles and Brinton got coconut with graham cracker pieces. It was such a sweet evening (er…no pun intended…) and we really appreciated our friends Rachelle and TJ for babysitting for us!

Hooray for blurry cell phone pictures!

These shoes– Ever since I found these on sale at Old Navy I have been wearing them with everything. I even blogged about them with this outfit. I love the color, the pattern, and the way they are so ridiculously comfortable…they are my new go-to. Luckily they are still available if you want to grab a pair for yourself!

Parks and Recreation– I know I am super late on this…but this show is hilarious. Probably why we have been binge watching it on Netflix for the past few weeks. I love finding a great show!

I think that’s about it. Well, not true. I have way more favorites than that…but they are mostly food. Haha. Plus I am super hungry while I’m writing this so maybe I just need to eat. Anyway…goodbye March! You were great!

June’s Favorite Things

Is it just me or did June go by really fast? I feel like I say something about how quickly time seems to pass in every post…maybe I just don’t have a very good grasp on time, haha. Either way, it is already time again for a favorite things post!

1. My Body Pillow

This is one of the best inventions ever. Maybe it is because I am so short, but this pillow is literally just about the length of my whole body, and makes sleeping–especially at 7 months pregnant–sooo much more comfortable! Brinton likes to joke that he has been replaced because I fall asleep cuddling with my pillow now instead of him! Oh well. Just a few more months and we can cuddle again (on the rare occasion that we get to sleep at all when baby comes, haha).

2. Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo Eye Shadow

This eye shadow is great! I wear it every day and it stays on really well. I had run out of my favorite primer, Urban Decay’s Eye Shadow Primer Potion, which really helped my eye makeup to not crease all day long. This cream gel is really long lasting and it doesn’t get all gross and creased after wearing it for a few hours. I just wish it would go on sale more often so I wouldn’t feel so badly stocking up on different colors!

"Barely Branded," one of my favorite go to shades.

3.  Yopa Greek Yogurt

Since finding out I have gestational diabetes, I have been looking for some delicious, healthy, low-carb snacks that I can enjoy when I am having a sweet craving. These really hit the spot! My local Safeway seems to only carry the strawberry with granola, blueberry with granola, and vanilla with chocolate chips, but their website says that they have a key lime with graham cracker flavor as well, which I would love to try. Each snack cup has only about 17g of carbs–a perfect serving size–and they are packed with protein so they keep me full longer. Plus, they really do make me feel like I get to indulge in something sweet…especially the vanilla and chocolate one!

4. Clinique BB Cream

I love this product. I find that it gives me just the right amount of coverage–a little more than a tinted moisturizer but not as much as a foundation. I’ve tried the CC cream as well, but I feel like this one is a little bit better for what I wanted to use it for (covering imperfections and blemishes). It also has SPF 30, which makes me feel like I’m getting just a bit more protection than just wearing my regular moisturizer and makeup alone.

5. Tory Burch Clutch

This clutch isn’t a clutch at all…it’s an eyeglass case that I absolutely fell in love with. The vibrant orange color is amazing and the lining on the inside is soft and suede-like. It’s the perfect size for a small clutch and big enough to fit my phone, a small wallet, and some lip gloss. Perfect!

What were your June favorites? Does anyone have any baby favorites that I should look into adding to our registry or making sure we have before baby gets here? Let me know in the comments!

May Favorites

I’m a few days late hopping on the “end of month favorites bandwagon,” but nevertheless I wanted to share some things I have loved this past month!

1. Sensationail

I absolutely love this at home gel kit. I was a complete and total skeptic before trying it, but now I am re-obsessed with painting my nails. I wont go into a ton of detail here, but I am planning on positing a review of the kit in a later post. If I linked it right, when you click on the picture it should take you straight to the Sensationail webpage if you want to go explore!

2. My Brita filtered water bottle

I have been trying to drink as much water as I can lately and this bottle makes it so easy. It is lightweight, easy to fill, doesn’t leak, and it was inexpensive! I know there are a ton of filtered water bottles out there, but it was nice that I easily found this at my local Walmart and it was only a few dollars compared to the more expensive brands.

3. Masterchef has returned!!!

Brinton and I LOVE this show! I always love watching the amazing things people can create with food. After watching it we always try and get fancy in the kitchen…sometimes it is a success and sometimes…not so much. Masterchef is on FOX on Wednesday evenings (you’ll have to find out what time it broadcasts in your time zone…we always seem to have things air at strange times in Hawaii).

4. The Beach

Okay so maybe this is a favorite every month, but isn’t this picture fantastic?! Brinton snapped this photo a few weeks ago just after sunrise up on North Shore. Moments like that remind me how blessed I am to be living in such a beautiful place.

What were some of your favorites in May?

January Favorite Things

I can’t believe January is over already! It really flew by, and I accomplished almost zero things that I wanted to. Haha, somehow that always happens. At least this year with being sick and working like crazy through most of the month I feel like I have a little bit of an excuse…but it isn’t really. Here is to renewing my motivation to get things done in February!

Anyway, here are some of my favorite things from January:

1. The return of season 3 of Pretty Little Liars.
(This is almost embarrassing for me to admit, but I literally watched all 2.5 seasons in December to catch up. I’m obsessed.)

Pretty Little Liars

2. Vera Bradley Birthday Sales
(I got this awesome cross-body for only $10!)

Vera Bradley Clare

3. My friend Kristen’s blog.
(She has been my opposite–completely productive–and actually done everything I wanted to do with my blog in January. I love reading it!)

kristen's notes blog picture

4. Pashmina Scarves
(So I live in Hawaii…I know it isn’t cold here, but I miss winter! Well…sometimes. When it gets down to chilly 72°, sometimes I like wearing these to church and pretending it is colder than it is. And then sometimes, I actually am chilly because I have acclimated to the 82° expectation of living in Hawaii!)

Happy January! I hope to see more of you all in February!
